poetry workshop for improving skills - feedback, readings, constructive critique, digging deep into your words, meeting creative friends
About this Event

Workshops are the quickest and most thorough, tried and tested way to become a better poet - no doubt.

Word Space and Waterstones are collaborating on a new series of poetry writing sessions!

Even more intimate and chilled than the usual open mic events, Word Space workshops are a cosy and more detailed dive into our poems.

This is one for anyone who wants to improve and take their poetry and writing practice to the next step - that's right, anyone : no level of writing experience necessary. The only requirement is an interest in learning and growing as a writer... and a pen.

The sessions is 50% guided, prompted writing formed from selected readings aimed at building your craft skills and 50% 'workshopping' - reading each other's poems critically, analysing and discussing technique and pushing each other creatively with suggestions, ideas and different perspectives.

This is a smaller event so tickets will be limited : )

Like all Word Space events, if you want to come but can't due to your financial situation send me a message and we'll sort out a reduced ticket price - no worries. If you are in work right now and doing ok, please donate generously so cheaper tickets for those that need them can keep happening - mutural arty community > capitalism

If you haven't been to Word Space Open Mic events and are wondering what this is all about and who I am:

I'm Joshua Hallam, poet and facilitator, MA in Writing Poetry from The Poetry School, host of Word Space and tutor at The Writing School. Word Space is a poetry events community started in 2022 which includes open mics, workshops, events and loads of good vibes. If you like good words and good folk, you'll love it.

Agenda

đź•‘: 12:00 PM - 12:05 PM
Welcome!

Info: Easing in to a chilled writing session - ice breakers, names and poetic thoughts

đź•‘: 12:05 PM - 01:00 PM
Writing

Info: We look at poems and pre-planned activities to encourage some writing. Some are very heavily guided and others are more free-form and let the imagination do it's own thing. Plenty of questions, plenty of discussion, plenty of words on the page

đź•‘: 01:00 PM - 02:00 PM
Workshopping

Info: Looking at each other's poems. Not everyone needs to bring a poem - there's plenty of chance to engage without. Those that want to workshop put their names in the hat and we draw out to see who goes first. 15 minutes per poem starting with compliments on things that we think work followed by constructive suggestions on things we might change. All done with a lot of love and the central aim of learning, improving and sharing.
