Whose voices do we hear when we tell the story of rebetiko? In this narrated concert, vocalist and independent researcher Lidya Durmazgüler follows eight women who shaped the music from the 1920s to the 1960s. Marika Papagika, Roza Eskenazi, Rita Abatzi, Sofia Karivali, Marika Ninou, Ioanna Georgokopoulu, Stella Haskil and Sotiria Bellou come into focus through their songs and the lives behind them.

From old Istanbul and Izmir to the tekes and tavernas of Piraeus, their paths run through migration and displacement, love, solidarity, sorrow and celebration. The ensemble plays the songs live while Durmazgüler carries the stories between them. You can hear the music’s rough edges, its warmth and the everyday worlds it came from.

Born in Istanbul to an Armenian family, Durmazgüler grew up in the multicultural neighbourhood of Kurtuluş/Tatavla and began singing in Armenian choirs as a child. Later, on Imbros, the Greek melodies of her childhood led her to rebetiko. She founded Women of Rebetiko in 2024 to explore why so many women performers had been left out of its familiar story.
