2026 highlights the 251st birth anniversary of the timeless British writer Jane Austen. Her literary works have inspired numerous re-telling and on-screen adaptations for generations. Underscoring literary realism, her novels have been influencing readers to continuously challenge and negotiate the meaning provided by social institutions such as marriage, family, or education. To celebrate the year after a great semiquincentennial for a writer of Austen’s stature, thus, calls for reimagination and re-contextualisation of her artistic genius and literary contribution. The department of English and Humanities of BRAC University is arranging an Inter-University Creative Competition titled “Who is Afraid of Jane Austen?” along with cosplay and artistic expressions in short films. The event invites students to engage in a conversation with Jane Austen and her works through creative projects. In the postmodern, digital landscape, we may explore what remains of Austen’s works on contemporary culture, media, and literature. Students are encouraged to connect the major themes of Austen’s work to the broader context of class, romance, gender dynamics, and education through their creative works.
The competition is divided into four categories including short stories, poems, short films, painting - inspired by the works of Jane Austen. For each category, one winner will be selected and awarded, with the scope of presenting their works in front of esteemed personalities both in and outside of academia. The submissions must be done before the event through filling out the Google Form linked below.
A performance session for cosplayers will be arranged by the BRACU students. All participants need to communicate to us through filling out a google form linked below.
