👣 Hike Description

From ancient villages to rolling chalk downs, this hike takes us through some of the most beautiful countryside in the Darent Valley. Our adventure begins in Otford before climbing steadily towards the North Downs Way, where spectacular views open across the village and surrounding valley. We then head through Kemsing Down Nature Reserve, passing glimpses of historic Otford Manor (Oak Hall), before continuing through Great Wood and Austin Spring.

By lunchtime, we will arrive in the picturesque village of Shoreham. In the 1820s, the celebrated landscape artist Samuel Palmer chose Shoreham as a peaceful escape from London's pollution. Inspired by William Blake, Palmer led a group of artists known as The Ancients, and today the former Ye Olde George pub proudly bears his name ( This 15th century pub was substantially rebuilt). We'll also pass the beautiful Church of St Peter and St Paul, renowned for its magnificent wooden rood screen and stunning stained-glass window designed by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones.

High above the village, you'll spot the impressive Shoreham Memorial Cross, carved into the chalk hillside in 1920 to honour local men who lost their lives in World War I. Measuring 100 ft long, it remains visible for miles.

After lunch, we will follow the scenic Darent Valley Path back to Otford. One of Kent's oldest villages, Otford dates back to the 6th century, with battles involving Offa and King Canute fought nearby. Explore the remains of Otford Palace, surrendered to Henry VIII in 1537, admire St Bartholomew's Church, whose construction began in 1060, and discover the famous Otford Solar System, believed to be the world's only true scale model of the Solar System. After completing the hike, why not celebrate the day with a well-earned drink or bite to eat at the historic Bull Inn, a traditional village pub with centuries of history.
