The Wizard of Oz (G, 1939) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House PerthYoung Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland) is swept away from her black-and-white Kansas farm by a ferocious tornado, awakening in the vibrant, magical land of Oz. Desperate to find her way home, Dorothy sets off down the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City, seeking help from the mysterious Wizard who rules the land. Along her journey, she gathers a trio of unlikely companions—a Scarecrow yearning for a brain, a Tin Man longing for a heart, and a Cowardly Lion desperate for courage—each searching for something they believe they lack. As the group faces the sinister Wicked Witch of the West, determined to claim Dorothy's ruby slippers, their journey toward the Emerald City becomes a quest of self-discovery, revealing that the qualities they sought were within them all along.
Director Victor Fleming crafts an enduring cinematic landmark, celebrated for its innovative use of Technicolor to distinguish the drab reality of Kansas from the dazzling fantasy of Oz. Judy Garland's iconic performance, anchored by her rendition of "Over the Rainbow," became one of the defining moments in movie musical history, while the film's imaginative production design and memorable supporting performances created a fully realised fantasy world that has captivated generations of audiences. The film's blend of adventure, music, and genuine emotional resonance about home, courage, and self-worth has cemented its status as one of the most beloved and frequently revisited films ever made, its imagery and songs having become deeply embedded within popular culture itself.
