In 2026, the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence. This historic milestone provides a unique opportunity to revisit a fundamental chapter of American history: the role played by Spain and Hispanics in the birth of the United States.
As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, The Hispanic Council invites you to “The Role of Hispanics in the Independence of the United States,” a conversation exploring the Hispanic contribution to American independence and the shared history that has connected the Hispanic world and the United States for more than two centuries.
From Spain’s political, military, and financial support for the American cause to the contributions of figures such as Bernardo de Gálvez, Fernando de Leyba, Francisco de Saavedra, and many others, the Hispanic presence was an important part of the events that led to the creation of the United States.
The event will bring together experts and guests to discuss this history, its significance within the broader story of American independence, and the importance of preserving and promoting this shared heritage today.
The conversation is part of The Hispanic Council’s work to highlight the historical ties between Spain, the Hispanic world, and the United States, particularly during the commemoration of the U.S. Semiquincentennial.
