The Day the Sea Turned Black

In March 1967, the supertanker Torrey Canyon struck the Seven Stones Reef between Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, releasing a vast cargo of crude oil and creating one of the most infamous maritime disasters of the 20th century.
For many, the images of oil-blackened seas, stricken beaches and the extraordinary bombing of the wreck remain unforgettable. The disaster shocked the nation, scarred the West Country coastline and changed the way the world responded to major oil pollution at sea.
Join us for a fascinating and thought-provoking luncheon lecture exploring the story of the Torrey Canyon, the grounding, the controversial clean-up operation and the lasting legacy of the disaster.
