About this Event
The Capital Crisis Game
Join us in person for a specially designed playshop – part theatre game, part interpretation of Karl Marx – loosely based on Volume 2 of Marx's Capital. Our game will explore capitalism's contradictions through sound-making activities, careful listening & collective inquiry. Using game cards and our everyday voices, we'll move around a circuit in a room, representing value in motion as conceived within capitalism. We'll meditate on how capitalism differs from other political economic possibilities, explore how capital's aims are at odds with those of individual capitalists, and consider how we can apply pressure to these tensions in order to find a post-capitalist life that is already present.
Marx's Capital Vol. 2 as Sonic Meditation & Theatre game
Marx's Capital offers a holistic picture of how our advanced industrial and post-industrial societies work. But while it offers helpful material for understanding our world, and for contemplating action to catalyse lasting positive change, it is also long and time-consuming to share with one another. In this playshop we will embody aspects of the capitalist system that appear in Capital Volume 2—that is, focused on the timing of capital's reproduction as it undergoes transformations from money form to productive form to commodity form. Participants will divide into groups to explore different ways we may already relate to this system. We will look for points of withdrawal, and will place contrarian lenses on our theory of the objective political economic structure.
