About this Event

Held in partnership between the Glasgow Latin American Research Network (GLARN), Glasgow’s Peaceful, Secure and Empowered Societies IRT, and the Scottish Peace Platform, this one-day symposium marks ten years since the signing of the peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC-EP. In light of this anniversary and Colombia’s current political moment, the event explores the challenges of building lasting peace and social justice. The symposium will promote exchange of knowledge and experiences of dialogue, mediation and peacebuilding between Colombia, Ireland, Scotland and beyond.

What to expect

  • Panel: Social dialogue in wounded countries. Reflections between Colombia and the UK. Myriam Méndez (Valiente es Dialogar), Gwen Burnyeat (Rodeemos el Diálogo and University of Oxford) and Avila Kilmurray (Social Change Initiative) share their reflections a decade after the agreement. Chair: Juliana Ramírez-Muñoz (University of Edinburgh).
  • Storytelling workshop. A hands-on session led by Trinidad Cabezón of The Storytelling Village, Irene Piedrahita Arcila and Maria Jose Bermeo (University of Glasgow).
  • Panel: Negotiations and challenges in peacebuilding. With Andrei Gómez-Suárez (Comuneros del Sur process). Chair: Asli Ozcelik (University of Glasgow).
  • Keynote: Carlos Beristain, commissioner of the Truth Commission in Colombia. Chair Mo Hume (University of Glasgow).

The day runs from 9:00 to 18:00, with registration from 9:00 and coffee and lunch breaks between sessions. The symposium is open to anyone interested in peace, memory, transitional justice and dialogue across divides, whether you come from academia, civil society or the wider Colombian and Scottish communities.

Following the symposium, there will be a keynote by Carlos Beristain, former commissioner of the Truth Commission in Colombia. The keynote speech will take place at 4.30 pm in room 916, 42 Bute Gardens. No registration is required.
