From the invention of photography, Black populations across the globe have been at the forefront of the technology’s innovation and social use. For many Black people living in the 19th and 20th centuries, photography served as a source of income, a platform for community building and political mobilization, and as a component of everyday interaction. Black use and innovation of the medium has long unfolded beyond the gaze and support of Western fine arts museums and universities. Furthermore, the history of photography is littered with universalisms that fail to capture the complex and diverse networks of circulation and innovation adopted by Black people.
