‘Controversial, professional, energetic, inspiring and Spirit-filled’ - The GuardianThe London Community Gospel Choir was founded in 1982 by Rev Bazil Meade MBE with a single concert in mind. Forty-four years later they have performed at the FA Cup Final at Wembley, main stage Glastonbury, Live 8 in Hyde Park, the Grammy Awards and the Royal Albert Hall. In 2013 they broke the Guinness World Record for the largest massed gospel choir in concert conditions at the Royal Festival Hall, gathering choirs from across Europe to sing “Oh Happy Day”. In 2022 Buckingham Palace asked them to perform the official Beacons song at the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee alongside Gregory Porter, broadcast to almost a billion people worldwide. Between those landmarks they have recorded with George Michael, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Adele, Tina Turner, Mariah Carey, Luther Vandross and the Gorillaz, and sung on the Walt Disney Lion King soundtrack.
For the Boisdale Sunday lunch they bring a seven-piece choir and four-piece band. The repertoire moves across gospel classics and R&B, which is exactly what LCGC have always done: gospel taken into venues and formats that broaden rather than restrict what the music can do. Bazil Meade built the choir on that principle in 1982 and it is still the reason the set works in a room like this one.
