Artist-Run Nature Workshops

These workshops are curated by Holland Park artist-in-residence, Alan McFetridge. Each month, Alan invites a guest artist to lead a workshop that brings their practice into dialogue with the park's living landscape.

This month’s guest artist is Timothy Sawyer Shepard is a London-based artist working with paper, photography, cine film, and music.

By Chance I Did Rove by Timothy Sawyer Shepard
29 November, 12-2pm.

By Chance I Did Rove explores wandering as a practice of openness and discovery. Drawing on the floating world of ukiyo-e, including Hiroshige’s and Hokusai’s wandered landscapes of the Tōkaidō, and a culture deeply shaped by Bashō, the workshop explores wandering as a way of seeing, and the idea that art grows from immersive experience.

We’ll meet at Holland Park Café before setting off on our own free wanderings through the park, becoming quietly immersed in passing impressions whilst taking quick photographs of whatever catches our eye along the way. There is no particular view to find or image to capture: the invitation is simply to wander, notice and remain open to what unfolds.

Returning to the café over coffee and cake, we’ll have small prints made from our photographs. Cutting, rearranging and recombining these fragments, we’ll allow a landscape to emerge — shaped by our encounters with the park, by memory and imagination, and by the possibilities discovered through the act of making. Rather than depicting a place from a single viewpoint, each work will evoke an experience of being there.

The artwork is not simply a representation of the landscape encountered. It is a landscape that comes into being through the experience of encountering it.

The parts are real; the whole is imagined.

No previous experience is needed. Open to all ages and abilities.

About the artist:

Timothy Sawyer Shepard is a London-based contemporary artist working with paper, photography, cine film and music. His practice explores the relationships between perception, consciousness and memory; he considers collage a metaphor for memory, perception and consciousness.

He studied Fine Art and Theology at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, and was an assistant to the British painter Michael Kidner RA from 1993 to 2007. He has also been a visiting tutor at Central Saint Martins and a guest lecturer at the Royal College of Art, London.

His Wandered Landscapes begin with wandering through a particular place without a specific purpose, gathering impressions and hundreds of photographic fragments. In the studio, these fragments are cut up and reassembled into a single image in which multiple perspectives and moments in time become one remembered vision, evoking his experience of wandering there rather than offering a strict depiction of place.

His exhibition By Chance I Did Rove was presented at Aldeburgh Beach Lookout in May 2025 and is currently exhibiting at Gallery Green, Holland Park.
