About this Event
Suburbia in the Air
As a child, the world was so large. Any space can be filled with a little bit of imagination. Suburbia in the Air is a construction of nostalgia depicting the feeling of my childhood in the suburbs of Oakville. Growing up, my neighbourhood served as an escape. A fantasy land where my sister and I could endlessly play with our creativity in our backyard. Moving to the West End of Toronto, I am reminded of home. Exploring trails, brick houses, and toys on the lawn, all make me nostalgic for a life I will never live again. Although laden with this grief, I am inspired to see the world with playfulness again.
Through the lens of my younger self, I imagine each photo as a window to my childhood memories. They are a starting off point of a fantastical make believe journey. This series is a reminder that we can still find whimsy in the world even in adulthood. There are reflections of my younger self in my everyday life. That child is still in there seeing the world with curiosity and patience.
As an adult, the world feels out of reach. It is impossible, but I want to go back to that time. I miss the "suburbia in the air". But that is okay. I will live on with my childhood whispering to me through the window.
