About this Event
Street Yoga takes this ancient practice off the mat, out of the studio, and into your life.A walking, lived version where philosophy, awareness & attention are applied in real time, in the city.
As we walk together, let's explore:
- ideas rooted in the yogic traditions, but in dialogue with other ways humans have tried to understand life.
- the cultivation of awe for its mental, physical, & spiritual benefits
- light-touch history to interpret our surroundings in new ways
- human connection through time together in this AI world (possibly the most important part)
I’ve spent 13 years working as a tour guide, and more recently trained as a yoga “teacher” over the course of a year in India & Nepal. Though I also engage in the physical practice, what struck me most wasn’t the postures but how relevant the wider philosophies still are... even to the hectic lives we live today.
Yoga cannot be removed from its origins in the Indian subcontinent but it resonates for many the world over because it also points to universal truths that have appeared across cultures, eras & traditions, under different names in different ways. Quite simply, what does it mean to be human?
Street Yoga can guide you through places, ideas, and ways of looking but like in postural (asana) practice, what you notice, feel or take away will be entirely your own. We will make space for this.
This doesn’t need to replace any practice you already have. It can sit alongside it. Be an alternative. A one-off. Or something you never do again. You don't need to believe a certain thing or live a specific way. It's about what helps us remember who we are, not in arguing about who’s doing it best.
At its heart, Street Yoga asks - the world doesn’t stop moving so how might we find contentment & stillness within it?
No fancy retreats. No flights. No membership. No forests. Just urban walking, noticing & discovering the extraordinary in the ordinary we usually just pass by, headed for our destination.
You’ll meet like-spirited people, explore a raft of wisdom through the ages & we'll see together how we might experience the art of life as a living practice. Nothing dramatic, just presence.
Why starting in January?
January is often hijacked by the pressure to become someone 'better'. Y’know… optimisation, shame, bodies as projects, 'new year, new me'.
But there's a different view.
You don’t need a new you. According to yogic thinking, you’re already everything you need to be - it’s about remembering, not fixing.
Each walk has a loose theme and will change starting points each week. The ideas contained within them offer context, not conclusions. They’re shared, not imposed. Nobody has all the answers, the search for meaning is a collective endeavour, and I'm fascinated to see what a group approach to the practice ofthe other parts of yoga might be.
Take what you need, leave the rest.
Everyone is welcome. We might take different paths through life but at the end of the day, we're all heading for the same destination - let's walk together a while ❤️
