Who decides what deserves to be remembered? This is the radical question that artist and archivist Guadalupe Rosales has long asked through their practice. Their answer lies in what official archives leave out: family photographs, photocopied flyers, snapshots taken in a bedroom or a parking lot after a party in Boyle Heights LA.
Between the collective Latin@/x and the rave world, their practice joins universes – , – that share the need to invent safe spaces and forms of belonging where none existed.
Rosales presents two new books and a zine, opening a conversation on how an archive born from personal need became a shared practice, and how the book can be a tool for building collective memory and imagining possible futures. (Random House, 2026), a memoir weaving prose, photographs, and flyers to tell of adolescence in East LA, sisterhood, and coming to terms with their queerness. (MIT Press, 2026), which looks at lowriders as art and resiliance, and at cruising as a political act in public space. Roll Call zine completes the picture, bringing their research into the DIY spirit of publishing.
– is a multidisciplinary artist who draws on archives to create immersive and sensorial spaces that activate memory and evoke collective experience. Thei are best known for creating community-generated projects that respond to the under/misrepresentation and historical erasure of Latin@/x communities. Their work has been shown at the Museo Universitario del Chopo, the Dallas Museum of Art, Haus der Kunst, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Hammer Museum, and Storefront for Art and Architecture, La Biennale di Venezia.
