Some stories are too important to be forgotten. Join us for an evening of film, connection and conversation as we come together ahead of World AIDS Day.
Hosted by Aberdeen in partnership with , this special screening brings together professionals and businesses from across Scotland to connect, learn and reflect. Enjoy refreshments and networking, find out more about Waverley Care's work, and discover the stories behind the US AIDS Memorial Quilt – the largest community arts project in history, created in memory of friends, family members and loved ones lost to AIDS.
Why ‘Common Threads – Stories from the Quilt’ matters
Through intimate interviews, archival footage and the stark statistics of the time, this Academy Award winning film moves between deeply personal loss and powerful collective activism – a portrait of communities who refused to let the people they loved be forgotten.
A film like this stays with you – and it's even more powerful as a shared experience. Together, you'll have the chance to:
- Reflect on how far we've come – and why huge progress in HIV treatment hasn't yet ended stigma
- Understand the power of speaking up: what can the public health and political response to AIDS teach us about leading when it matters most?
- Experience community in action: how did a quilt become both a memorial and a protest – and what does that tell us about the power of coming together?
- Breakdown the stigma: the epidemic touched people from every background – whose experiences still go unheard today, and what part can we play?
- Leave with fresh perspective and conversation starters to take back to your teams and networks
Come for the film, stay for the conversation – we'd love you to join us.
