About this Event
We’re Building with Mycelium with Kit!
Discover two ways to build with living mycelium: growing objects in moulds and sculpting free-form designs by hand.
Surrounded by examples of mycelium-grown bowls, sculptures, picture frames and embossed bricks, we’ll begin with an introduction to Kit’s biodesign practice and the possibilities and limitations of working with living materials.
You’ll then get hands-on with the process, preparing colonised substrate for moulding and mixing a second batch with xanthan gum to create a sculptable material. Use these techniques to make your own bowl, brick, frame or small sculpture.
Take your creation home in a sterile bag and learn how to care for it as the mycelium continues to grow. Your piece will typically become fully colonised within 2–3 weeks. You'll receive instructions how to preserve it. (Duration: 2 hours)
Your Facilitator:
Kit Ondaatje Rolls is a biodesigner, fungi researcher, and author.
She holds an MA in Biodesign from Central Saint Martins, where she specialised in regenerative systems and mycelium-based materials. After graduating, she worked at Bristol Fungarium, running her own lab/studio and creating their limited-edition mycelium packaging.
Kit recently completed the Wildbiome Project, a citizen science study where 120 foragers ate only wild food for three months to explore its effects on human health and the gut microbiome.
In 2025, Kit founded the London Native Fungi Library, a living genetic archive of edible and medicinal mushroom strains sourced from Greater London, which she cultivates and extracts into native mushroom tinctures.
Passionate about biodiversity and education, Kit has led mushroom cultivation, mycofabrication, and ecology talks, walks, and workshops internationally and for a wide range of ages. Her work explores the ecological, cultural, and creative worlds of fungi, encouraging deeper engagement with the natural world. Her first book, FUNGI: Creatures & Cultures, was published by Watkins earlier this year.
All levels of experience and knowledge regarding fungi are welcome. In fact, everyone is welcome. The South London Mushroom Club Events are donation-based and you can give as much as you can afford.
The suggested donation is £10 to support the mushroom club; £5 to cover the costs of room hire, refreshments, snacks and materials; and less if you cannot afford either of those.
