Ten years on, the music returns.Philharmonic Wind Orchestra presents Sounds of Japan V: Ten Years On, a special concert celebrating the enduring artistry and vibrant imagination of Japanese wind music. Marking the return of acclaimed composer and conductor Ito Yasuhide to PWO after a decade, this concert is both a reunion and a reflection on the music that continues to inspire generations of musicians and audiences.
The programme brings together the distinctive musical voices of Japan, from the expressive lyricism and theatrical flair of Ito's compositions to the evocative soundscapes of Toshio Mashima's The Strait. Presented ten years after Mashima's passing, the work serves as a heartfelt tribute to a composer whose music has left a lasting mark on the wind band repertoire.
Audiences will also experience the striking sounds of the Tsugaru-shamisen, a traditional Japanese three-stringed instrument, in Ito's Concerto for Tsugaru-Shamisen and Band, featuring soloist Yamanaka Nobuto. The concert further explores the breadth of wind music through the Singapore premiere of Ito's Peace, Peace, So Sing the Birds, the theatrical Paraphrase on the Opera “Mister Cinderella”, and a grand wind band interpretation of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, featuring Symphonia Choralis, directed by Chong Wai Lun.
More than a musical celebration, Sounds of Japan V: Ten Years On is a reflection on time, remembrance, and the enduring connections forged through music. As familiar voices return and beloved works find new life on stage, PWO invites audiences to rediscover the richness of Japanese wind music and celebrate a decade of memories, artistry, and musical friendship.
Join us for an evening where tradition meets imagination, and where ten years of music come full circle.
