About this Event
The programme features songs by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Sviridov (from the vocal poem Petersburg), performed by former soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre — Efim Zavalny (baritone) and Rebekka Magomedova (piano). The concert also includes the Fantasy for Piano by the Ukrainian composer Fyodor Akimenko and the finale of Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 7.
The performance lasts approximately one hour and takes place in an intimate chamber setting for around 50 listeners. The songs will be sung in Russian, and a printed programme with English translations will be provided.
A note from the performers
My name is Rebekka, and I am a pianist. Until 2022 I worked in St Petersburg at the Mariinsky Theatre. As for many of my compatriots, my life since then has been divided into a “before” and an “after”.
Over the past years the world has gone through events that have separated people and reshaped many lives. This programme grew from a desire to reflect on such moments of rupture in history. The composers in tonight’s concert — Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Akimenko, Prokofiev and Sviridov — each lived through times when the world around them was changing dramatically.
I will perform this programme together with my husband, baritone Efim Zavalny, who was also a soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre. For both of us, it is meaningful that this music will be performed at Pushkin House in London. The poets whose words you will hear this evening — among them Alexander Pushkin, Alexander Blok and Dmitry Merezhkovsky — are woven into the cultural memory of Russia, and their voices continue to resonate far beyond their own time.
For me it is especially significant that the concert takes place on the eve of Easter — a celebration that symbolises hope, renewal and transformation.
