Skill Up Visits: Drawing Edges and Entrances at the Garden Museum
Thursday 29th October 2026, 10.30am-12.30pm
Join RIBA Learning, and artist and educator Marianne Holm Hansen at the Garden Museum to observe, draw and model the connections and junctions between buildings and landscapes, interiors and exteriors.
Taking inspiration from the Garden Museum, a thoughtfully converted and extended church, we will think about how indoor and outdoor spaces are connected to one another. How do architects and landscape architects design buildings and gardens that blur the boundary between inside and out?
Explore the edges of interiors and exteriors using drawing, collage and model-making techniques to communicate your ideas, you will be tasked with designing your own building and garden entrance: a porch over a front door, a pavilion in a public park or the meeting point of a building and courtyard garden.
Registration
We are trying to keep this popular event free of charge; to do please ensure the registration form is completed by a parent or guardian at the latest a week before the event. If the registration form is not completed, we will cancel your ticket and release it to someone on the waitlist.
Accessibility
This workshop will take place on the Ground Floor, Nave area of the Garden Museum. The Garden Museum is accessible to wheelchair users with level access to the museum through the Garden Cafe. For more information on accessibility please visit the Garden Museum website.
Marianne Holm Hansen is an artist that works across drawing, writing and photography to examine how images, languages and architectural space impacts on how we navigate, understand and experience the world around us. She often collaborates with diverse groups and individuals across disciplines and works extensively with institutions such as Tate and RIBA to deliver workshops and research projects that invite participants to engage critically and creatively across media and themes.
The Garden Museum is London’s home for everyone who loves gardens, plants, and the stories they tell. Their medieval church-turned-museum is filled with exhibitions, a collection of art and objects bringing garden history to life, free activities, and seasonal events exploring how and why we garden. Their temporary exhibitions explore the art, history and design of gardens, whilst the permanent collection galleries, chart the history of British gardening from the 16th century to today.
Skill Up Visits
Following the closure of RIBA’s London home, 66 Portland Place, for renovation, our Skill Up programme is returning as Skill Up Visits; a series of curated visits to architecture-related places in London. For teenagers aged 16 to 18, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about architecture and design, explore new institutions, exhibitions and buildings, and think critically and respond creatively within workshop activities and briefs.
Terms and Conditions
- Tickets for participants under the age of 18 must be booked by a parent or guardian and advance online registration is essential. Bookings made on behalf of someone else still require advance online registration and it is your responsibility to share the registration form with that person. If we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.
- Cancellations must be made in writing to [email protected].
- We reserve the right to alter the advertised content of events.
- In the unlikely event we need to cancel we will contact all ticket holders as soon as possible. We cannot reimburse or compensate for travel or other associated costs.
- On entry to the event participants agree to behave in an appropriate manner; the RIBA reserves the right to remove participants who behave inappropriately from events and request their immediate collection by parents/guardians.
