October is officially here, which means I will be ushering in a healthy dose of Halloween horror for SINema Sundays- Sacrilegious Cinema: Menagerie of Madness- starting off strong with the first two TERRIFIER films to get in the Samhain spirit for grindhouse galore this upcoming October 4th. 🃏🩸🎭At 8PM, we head northeast on Halloween night where we encounter a maniacal clown called ‘Art’ as he prowls the streets to hunt for potential prey- causing mischief and mayhem in his wake throughout this bloody gruesome slasher by written and directed by Damien Leone. A throwback to the splatter era of cinema, Terrifier (2016) channels horror icons of the 1980s filling the void left behind in more recent decades, ultimately presenting Art, the antithesis of all a clown is intended to represent in his mean-spirited malice and unadulterated kills. Along with Leone’s grisly special effects, David Howard Thornton’s portrayal of the sadistic character, inspired by physical actors such as Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton of the silent film era, as well as more contemporaries like Doug Jones, cements Art as a modern horror legend amidst a decade bereft of contenders. This revival of the exploitation sub-genre began budding in 2008 with Leone’s first official entry into the Terrifier universe with his 11 minute short ‘The 9th Circle’, wherein the villainous clown was first conceived; years later, following another short and a 2013 anthology connecting his previous works, the celebrated 2016 iteration was born, launching a series of sequels delving deeper into the origin of this mysterious evil, forging a low budget love letter to gore hounds and slasher fiends alike in its delivery and gritty execution.
Then, at 10PM, the silent clown returns to the sleepy town of Miles County a year after his previous atrocities to continue his reign of vengeance on final girl Sienna (played flawlessly by Lauren LaVera) and her younger brother Jonathan (Elliot Fullam). This gore filled sequel is not for the faint of heart- although it differs in its predecessor in that Art’s origins begin to unravel in this climactic circus showdown. Damien Leone’s TERRIFIER II (2022) investigates the lore laid out in the initial short, featuring the perversion of religious iconography, introducing an intriguing depiction of archetypes of the aged old battle of good versus evil, offering a worthy adversary for Art under new paranormal pretenses and demonic dealings. This pivotal chapter helped pioneer Terrifier into the mainstream consciousness in contrast to its underground counterpart, crowning Art the Clown a household name alongside horror idols like Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers.
