She Loves MeBook: Joe Masteroff, Music: Jerry Bock, Lyrics: Sheldon Harnick
Directed by Dorea Slagle
Synopsis: In this romantic musical comedy of mistaken identity, there is no love lost between Amalia and Georg, two perfume clerks who can’t seem to find common ground. Ironically, the two communicate almost daily as pen pals through a Lonely Hearts Club, each unaware that their disagreeable coworker is also their beloved “Dear Friend.” When Georg discovers this, he kicks off a new quest–to win Amalia’s heart. With a soaring musical score, this witty comedy whisks audiences away unapologetically into a Romantic Atmosphere—with all the joy (and anxiety!) that falling in love can bring.

Audition Requirements:
Open Call. We will see actors on a first come, first serve basis. You only need to attend one night of auditions. Sign up begins at 5:30pm. Please bring a headshot and resume. Prepare two contrasting 16-bar cuts: a lyric ballad and an uptempo/comedy song from the Golden Age canon (1940s-1960s). Please note that we may not have everyone sing both songs, depending on time, so plan to lead with the song you feel showcases your skill set best. There will also be a dance call at 7pm each night of auditions. If you want to be considered for Ilona, Kodaly, or any ensemble track, please plan to participate and dress accordingly and wear jazz or character dance shoes.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Non-Equity actors for roles in SHE LOVES ME. We are seeking a diverse cast of performers for this production. People of all genders, races, ages, and sexual orientation are encouraged to audition.
Georg Nowack: The determined assistant manager of the shop. A bit shrewd and uptight; nevertheless, he is a hopeless romantic who finds solace in writing letters to an anonymous “dear friend.” High Baritone (B2-F4). Age Range: 30-40 / Male Presenting
Amalia Balash: A bright, eager, and highly skilled woman who talks her way into a job at the shop. Like Georg, she is a dreamer who lives for the letters she receives from her unknown “dear friend.” She is witty, and strong willed. Soprano (Bb3-B5). Age Range: 25-35 / Female Presenting
Ilona Ritter: A savvy clerk who is tired of being unlucky in love. She is trapped in a dysfunctional, “on-again, off-again” affair with the suave Steven Kodaly but eventually finds the strength to seek a more meaningful relationship. Strong dancer. Mezzo (F#3-E5) Age Range: 30-40 / Female Presenting
Steven Kodaly: A dapper, charming-yet-shallow, highly manipulative salesman at the parfumerie. He is a polished womanizer who uses his charm to get what he wants, often at the expense of Ilona’s feelings or Georg’s professional standing. Strong mover. Tenor (B2-A4) Age Range: 25-40 / Male Presenting
Mr. Maraczek: The proud and dedicated owner of the parfumerie. While usually a father figure to his employees, a misunderstanding regarding his wife’s infidelity makes him uncharacteristically short-tempered and suspicious of Georg. Baritone (B2-C4) Age Range: 50-65 / Male Presenting
Ladislav Sipos: A middle-aged salesman and a devoted family man. He is Georg’s confidant and the “peacemaker” of the shop. A bit of a philosopher. His primary goal is to keep his job and avoid conflict, famously singing about his desire to “not rock the boat.” Baritone (A2-E4) Age Range: 30-50 / Male Presenting
Arpad Laszlo: The shop’s energetic and ambitious delivery boy. He is young, infectious, and desperate to be promoted to a full-time clerk, eventually proving his worth through his loyalty to Mr. Maraczek and his intentional observations. Tenor (Bb2-E4) Age Range: 18-25 / Open to any Gender
The Headwaiter: The pompous and stressed manager of the Cafe Imperiale. He is obsessed with maintaining a “romantic atmosphere” and is easily frustrated by the clumsy antics of his patrons and staff. Comedic solo. Baritone. Age Range: 30-50 / Any Gender
Keller: A private investigator hired by Mr. Maraczek to look into his wife’s private life, whose report inadvertently triggers the main conflict between Maraczek and Georg. Any voice type. Age Range: 25-45 / Male Presenting
The Ensemble/Featured Dancers: Various customers, carolers, and the staff of the Cafe Imperiale, who help bring the bustling atmosphere of 1930s Budapest to life. Age Range: 18-60 / Any gender / Various vocal ranges
Please note that we will be casting Understudies for lead roles, who will double up on an ensemble track. All understudies will be guaranteed one performance in their lead track.
