Gathering all my gal pals! Come join Science AL!VE for a fun-filled day of science, where we’ll uncover the mechanics behind everyday things we use, from the circuits that light up our world to a behind-the-scenes look at candles. Through hands-on workshops, participants will team up to explore the chemistry and engineering behind products like bath bombs and lip gloss, and create fun projects they can take home. Will you crack the formula for the perfect glow-up, or will you need to head back to the lab for one more experiment?
Session 1: Fizzy Bath Bombs
This workshop is the bomb! Discover how your nose detects thousands of different scents and what sets off that signature fizz when a bath bomb hits the water. Mix, mould and scent your very own bath bomb to treat yourself after a long day in the lab.
Session 2: Shell Candles
Shell yeah, it’s time to shine! Explore the science of combustion and what it takes to keep a flame burning. Then design, colour, scent and decorate your own seashell melt candle that’s totally one of a kind.
Session 3: Shimmer Lip Balm
Gloss up your science skills! Find out how polymers, oils and tiny mica “mirrors” work together to give lip gloss its smooth texture and sparkle. Blend your own custom gloss from scratch and leave with a shimmer that’s all your own.
Session 4: Glowing Textile Circuits
Get ready to be the brightest in the room! Learn how circuits work and which materials let electricity flow, then engineer a pressure-sensitive light-up circuit with a colour-changing LED. Sew it into a felt creation you design yourself.
Sessions are subject to change and will be adjusted to different age groups.
As part of our efforts to create inclusive, bias-free learning environments that advance gender equity, our Girls and Young Women Programs welcome gender-diverse youth, including but not limited to cis girls, trans girls, non-binary youth, and gender non-conforming youth.
