About this Event

ANTiPODE is excited to host Serica, a five-voice ensemble of pipa, guitar, cello, violin, and hand percussion. With members whose backgrounds span China, Iran, and the United States, Serica draws from musical traditions around the world, shaping them into bold new arrangements with improvisation.

From the ancient Chinese pipa to the Persian tonbak, and music from composers across the globe, this is an evening for anyone who loves discovering new instruments, music, and cultures.

The performance takes place inside the gallery, in dialogue with Saïna Heshmati’s exhibition .

More about the Artists:

Carrie Wang: Pipa

Carrie Wang is a pipa musician and educator, member of China National Orchestra Society Pipa Committee, founder of Echo Art Center, and president of Cross Culture Music Society (NPO). Carrie is currently based in the greater Seattle area, where she actively performs and teaches. In 2022, she performed Ghost Opera by Tan Dun with the Seattle Symphony. In 2020, she was invited to perform in the Netflix movie The Harder They Fall.

Born in Xiamen, China, Carrie represents the next generation of her family's musical tradition. Her mother Kunli Li is a well-known Chinese pipa virtuoso and professor from Xiamen University. Carrie is the first Chinese student who received a master's degree in music education from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati.

Martin Budde: Guitar

Martin Budde is a guitarist and composer/educator based in Seattle, WA. Having grown up playing music with his family, Martin has established himself as a sought-after guitarist and composer in Seattle, across the West Coast, and internationally. He co-founded the Seattle/New York-based contemporary jazz group Meridian Odyssey, whose debut album, Second Wave, was named one of the top 15 Seattle records of 2020. The group's second full-length album, Earthshine, was voted Best NW Recording of the Year by Earshot Jazz; both albums were released on Origin Records.

Martin's solo record Aperture was selected by the Anchorage Daily News as one of Alaska's best releases of 2020. His most recent record, Back Burner, was released in 2023 on Origin Records. Martin's music is dynamic and grounded, with a strong melodic voice that speaks to American music while exploring new creative territory.

Adrian Golay: Cello

Adrian Golay performs and teaches cello in the Seattle area. Although trained in classical playing, he has a particular interest in contemporary music and multidisciplinary projects. He's performed and recorded numerous premieres, including works by Moira Smiley, Claude Baker, and Yie Eun Chun, many of them with the New Music Ensemble at the Jacobs School of Music.

Currently, he participates in new collaborations such as Serica and the Faraz Ensemble, as well as Seattle-area orchestras like Seattle Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where he studied under Emilio Colón and graduated in spring 2023.

Shagha Taheri: Violin

Shagha Taheri was born and raised in Tehran. She began studying violin at an early age under the guidance of accomplished violinists including Siavash Zahireddini, Nima Zahedi, Taha Abedian, and Pedram Faryousefi. At the age of 18, she joined the Austrian-Iranian Symphony Orchestra, first conducted by Vijay Upadhyaya and later by Christian Schulz.

After moving to the United States in 2013 to pursue a career in architecture, she began exploring diverse musical collaborations, including working with a flamenco guitarist, performing in a contemporary composition recital at the University of Houston, and touring across the U.S. with the Persian Dorian Band, each one a step further from the music she'd trained in. In 2025, she was accepted into the Global Musician Workshop for a week of cross-cultural musical collaboration, where she shared the stage with renowned musicians including Mike Block, Hanneke Cassel, and Edward Perez.

Rambod Dargahi: Hand Percussion

Born and raised in Esfahan, Iran, Rambod Dargahi is a hand percussionist based in Seattle. He began his musical journey at a young age, inspired by the rhythms played by his older brother on the tonbak, the ancient Persian goblet drum. A self-taught percussionist, Rambod developed his craft by studying and emulating the styles of master tonbak players, making his debut in Iran in 2008.

Since moving to the United States in 2011, he has collaborated with a wide range of musicians and ensembles and performed on stages across the country. He has had the honor of sharing the stage with renowned world musicians such as Jamey Haddad, Balla Kouyaté, Kala Ramnath, Wu Man, and Ara Dinkjian at Silkroad's Global Musician Workshop. While his deepest passion remains the tonbak, Rambod also plays a variety of percussion instruments, including the cajón, djembe, darbuka, udu, and bendir.
