Once a vibrant downtown community, Sacramento Japantown was devastated by the unjust incarceration of Japanese Americans and immigrants during World War II and later by redevelopment that erased much of the neighborhood by the 1960s.The exhibition will be an immersive experience featuring Japan Alley facades, artifacts, videos, sounds, and personal stories from Japantown descendants.
The exhibition honors Sacramento’s Japanese American pioneers, who rebuilt their lives against immense odds, and ensures that the spirit of Japantown remains a lasting and meaningful part of our city's history.
The exhibition opens Friday, November 6 and runs through May 2027.
We will kick off the new exhibition with a festival on Saturday, November 7, from 11am to 3pm. Activities will be held in the Museum and outdoors.
Enjoy FREE ADMISSION at this family-friendly event which will include crafts, demonstrations, cultural performances, panel talks, vendors, and a day of exploring the exhibition, Sacramento Japantown: Destroyed by Design.
