About this Event

In 1996 a nineteen-year-old Minneapolitan named Ryan Schreiber fired up his family’s desktop computer and brought his dream to life: a daily online music zine published for, and by, listeners like him. He named his site Pitchfork. It soon became one of the most consequential music forces of our time, a “taste-making institution” (The New York Times) that would change online criticism and fan culture for good.

Schreiber and his team published landmark, often viral reviews that boosted artists like Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, and Wilco; crowned masterpieces by Radiohead, Frank Ocean, and Kanye West; and tanked several careers, all the while proving that taste—more than hype—was paramount to legitimacy. His book follows the consequences and thrills of Pitchfork’s make-or-break criticism; the boom-bust of digital media; and the albums, concerts, and meltdowns of some of our most beloved musicians. Schreiber is equally forthcoming about his own strenuous growing pains as he sought to stay true to Pitchfork’s roots while the site morphed from a bedroom blog to “the most influential music publication to emerge in the Internet age” (The Atlantic).

Now, thirty years after Pitchfork’s launch, Schreiber recounts the extraordinary story of his culture-changing publication and the generation of listeners and musicians it emboldened, provoked, introduced, and celebrated. Revealing, thrilling, and compulsively readable, Weird Era is a memoir of fandom, music, media, and the power of trusting your instincts.

Ryan Schreiber founded Pitchfork in 1996 and served alternately as its editor in chief and CEO until 2019. A National Magazine Award winner twice honored in Time magazine’s TIME100 poll of the world’s most influential people, he continues to shape culture as a journalist, media strategist, and public speaker. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
