Join us for an open day with the chance to connect with and reflect on the Church of England's Black History at the Archives.
About this Event

Join us for a unique opportunity to:

  • Explore the archives, libraries, and conservation work at Lambeth Palace Library.
  • Meet our expert archivists, librarians, and conservators, and gain behind-the-scenes insight into their fascinating work preserving historic collections.
  • Learn about activists and figures from Black History that have archive material in the archive
  • Learn about the Church Commissioners’ links to the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the significant records held in the archive.
  • Take part in guided tours of Lambeth Palace Library and its archives (spaces limited, available on a first-come, first-served basis).

This is a chance to connect with history, reflect on the Church of England’s Black History, and see how the past is preserved for future generations.

Photographs and/or filming will be taken at this event to be used for publicity purposes. By registering to attend this event, you are giving permission for your images to be used for these reasons.

All are welcome, but those wishing to attend should book a free ticket or email [email protected] no later than Friday 10 April.

Due to the popularity of Routes in the Records and limited space, we will be offering seating to guests with a ticket on a first come basis. Please ensure that you arrive on time to secure your place.

Please note that tickets must be booked individually for security purposes.

10.15am – Opening Remark and Welcome by Charmaine Simpson, Research & Engagement Coordinator

10.30am – Presentation – ‘The Codrington's Plantations - A Micro-Global history of the colonial Church of England' by Eleanor Hex

11.15am - 11.30am – Break

11.30am – Presentation – ‘We must speak in a whisper: Remembering the 1816 Barbados Rebellion' by Annabelle Gilmore

12.30pm – 1.30pm – Lunch

1.30pm- Presentation – ‘Insurrection and International Law: From Bussa's Rebellion to the Durban Declaration' by Kwesi Ochosi

2.30pm - 2.45pm - Break

2.45pm - 4pm – Tours of the Lambeth Palace Archives and networking

4pm – Conclusion and Close
