About this Event
WHO & WHAT
Come along to our intuitive writing workshop promoting the deconstruction of ‘proper language’. Hosted by Decoded Roots for the exhibition, 'Refrains on The Edge of Appearance', curated by Charmaine Wah, supported by the We Are Shoes off collective.
Rotting English celebrates the deviations from standardised language, encouraging people to bring their slang, patois, singlish, creole and more to the forefront of their writing. Ignore the structures that you have internalised through rigid education, and write in a way that comes innately to you.
WHEN
9th May. 2pm - 4pm
WHERE
Brunswick Park, outside of the outhouse gallery (24, unit 1 Brunswick Park, London SE5 7RH)
IMPORTANT INFO
This is a picnic-style workshop so feel free to bring your own blankets, snacks, and cushions.
Pens and paper will be provided, although you can bring your personal journals and sketchbooks too.
FURTHER READING
Rotting English has been inspired by Édouard Glissant’s concept of ‘opacity’ in context to postcolonial identities, read more about his theory here. As well as the writings of Ken Saro Wiwa and his book ‘Sozaboy’, and Sam Selvon’s ‘The Lonely Londoners’, written respectively in Nigerian Pidgin and Trini Creole.
We look forward to rotting language with you!
