About this Event
The Ayin Salon series returns with an evening of radical Jewish imagination, spotlighting Ayin Press authors who are reimagining Jewish creativity, symbolism and storytelling for a new generation.
The 50th anniversary edition of Fragments of a Future Scroll: Hasidism for the Aquarian Age revisits the paradigm-shifting first book by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi– Reb Zalman – one of the most influential Jewish figures in postwar America and a founder of the Jewish Renewal movement. First published by a small press in 1975 and long out of print, Fragments captures Reb Zalman’s early vision of a “Hasidism for the Aquarian Age.”
A boundary-breaking weave of stories, teachings and mystical insights, Fragments imagined a Judaism evolving for a changing world. Rabbi Tirzah Firestone and Rabbi Dan Goldblatt – both ordained by Reb Zalman – join Sam Shonkoff, Taube Family Associate Professor of Jewish Studies at the Graduate Theological Union, to revisit his extraordinary spiritual legacy and consider what his vision has to offer us 50 years later.
Rabbi Tirzah Firestone is an author, psychotherapist and leading voice in the Jewish Renewal movement. Ordained by Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, she is the author of Wounds into Wisdom and a contributor to the 50th anniversary edition of Fragments of a Future Scroll.
Rabbi Dan Goldblatt was ordained by Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and has been a leader in the Jewish Renewal movement for decades. He served for 30 years as spiritual leader of Beth Chaim Congregation in Danville and is a past president of OHALAH, the Association of Rabbis and Cantors for Jewish Renewal.
Sam Shonkoff is Taube Family Associate Professor of Jewish Studies at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. A scholar of modern Jewish thought and Hasidism, his work explores Jewish spirituality and its transformations in the modern world.
An Ayin Press Salon presented with Afikomen Judaica & Bookshop.
