SATURDAY 5.12 (approximately 1:30 PM– 8:30 PM)
❤ 1. Workshop with Kasia Wronka (2h): Khaliji inspirations - we will explore Khaleeji rhytms, feeling, basic steps that oriental dancers can use in their choreographies and we will learn combinations + short choreo <3
❤ 2. Workshop with Mohanned (2h): Al-Hajaa Dance (رقصة الهجع), a traditional Iraqi dance deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Iraq. The dance is closely associated with the Domari communities of Iraq, traditionally known in Iraq as Al-Kawliya (الكاولية). In English, the term “Domari from Iraq” can be used when referring to these communities.
Mohanned will begin the class by introducing the movement technique of Al-Hajaa, focusing on understanding the characteristic body movements, posture, weight shifts, and the relationship between movement and rhythm. Participants will learn how the movement is connected to the musical structure and how the dancer responds to the rhythm in a traditional context.
The class will not focus only on learning the choreography. It will also explore the character, movement quality, and cultural context of Al-Hajaa as part of Iraqi traditional dance heritage.
❤ 45 min break - additional option to purchase Lebanese Mezze (by Hadi Falah)
❤ 3. Workshop with Mohanned (2h): Al-Khashaba Dance from the city of Basra.
Al-Khashaba is a traditional folk dance from Basra, characterized by strong rhythms and agile, dynamic movement. Historically, this dance has masculine origins and was, and still is, performed primarily by men in private male gatherings. Women also perform Al-Khashaba today, but with a more feminine movement quality, while the original roots of the dance remain male. A defining feature of Al-Khashaba is the live dialogue between the dancer and the Kasour drummer. The performance relies entirely on this interaction, as the rhythm, movement, and energy are created through the direct, moment-to-moment exchange between the dancer and the Kasour player.
❤ After Party in Leila Mezze Lounge <3 (start 9 PM)
