Frequently asked questions:
What does a class look like? We start with prayer and reading through a bible verse from the book of Psalms, while seated on the floor in any position that is comfortable for you. When we're ready to start moving we perform a variety of seated and standing exercises to mobilise, stretch and strengthen our bodies. When our bodies are fully prepared, we return to our chosen passage and set it to actions - matching the words to movements.
This 'moving meditation', which we call a Psalm Sequence, is not only exercise but a way to pray through the Psalm, to meditate on the passage, and to connect with it in a visceral way. By committing the verse to our minds and our muscle memory, we fully embody the words and pray out the Psalm with our whole selves.
The style is slow, there will be options and you are encouraged to go at your own pace. It is a non-impact exercise class, in the "mind body" category - where we focus on breath, rest and stillness also.

Do I have to be a Christian to join the class?
Everyone is welcome to join the class, and although the class and meditation are based on scripture from the Bible, you don't need to identify as a Christian to join in.
Is Psalms & Stretches yoga or Pilates?
No, Psalms & Stretches is not a yoga class. Psalms & Stretches is a movement class that uses a range of stretches and positions that the human body can do, choosing those that have clear benefits and are safe to practise from a modern fitness perspective. You may recognise some shapes from yoga or dance, or some exercises from Pilates or general body conditioning because when it comes to exercise there is a finite number of ways the body can move according to our anatomical design - and we want to utilise
everything God gave us!
Our intention is really what's important, because it's not what we do, it's the why we do it. The intention of our movement is to stretch, mobilise and strengthen the body. We move because our bodies were designed to move; it is part of self-expression, good stewardship and a way we can worship God.
