Each year the course is preceded by a public lecture on a related subject. Past speakers have included cyber security expert Mikko Hypponen and Max Schrems. In 2025, we featured two journalists and their KC. Trevor Birney and Barry McCaffery were the journalists arrested following their investigation of a massacre in Northern Ireland where the already identified perpetrators are still at large 30 years after their crime. The two journalists had won their legal challenge at the Investigatory Powers Tribunal in December 2024.
The next UCL Annual Public Privacy Lecture will take place on January 27th 2027
