Who are the workers we need for a green economy? What opportunities exist for climate groups and philanthropies in partnering with workers’ movements, and what do we risk losing if we don't bring along the people powering the transition?
Aurora Lab is a Brazilian NGO that has been working on the intersection of labor and climate since 2024, actively listening to and partnering with oil and gas workers, autoworkers, electricity workers and a variety of other labor and climate groups, and social movements. These efforts have surfaced valuable insights on how climate and labor transitions are experienced on the ground, specially in the Global South.
During these 2 years, it became evident that workers do not oppose the transition to a low carbon economy. Quite the opposite, in many cases they are hopeful that the transition to a green economy will lead to a future with more opportunities and prosperity. At the same time, it also became clear that any conversation about green jobs is rather abstract and theoretical if it doesn't take into account the perspectives, voices and knowledge of workers who will actually implement the transition plans outlined in corporate headquarters, official cabinets or civil society initiatives.
Join us for a morning of conversations about the untapped potential of worker-centered strategies in expanding climate action, and how narratives focused on the workforce can unlock greater impact by amplifying the amazing technical, policy and grassroots work being done by climate organizations, unions and labor groups, and frontline communities.
