About this Event
Plants on Film: Exploring Phytogram Animation
Join Francisca Duran for an evening of learning and creation at Plants on Film: Exploring Phytogram Animation. This hands-on session invites participants to explore an experimental, camera-less animation technique where plant life becomes both the subject and the medium of photographic reproduction.
Plant matter sourced from local Ontario growers and farmers will be provided in the studio. We’ll soak the gathered materials in an organic developer, then experiment with 16mm and 35mm film stock and photo paper to craft phytograms—images created by the direct exposure of light-sensitive materials to plant matter.
Phytograms reveal intricate, organic patterns through a process that blends chance, nature, and analog magic. We’ll all work together on a collaborative piece, which we’ll watch on screen at the end of the workshop.
Whether you’re an experienced artist or simply curious, this workshop offers a rare chance to connect with the poetic potential of plant-based filmmaking where art grows from the earth itself.
All materials, including film stock and photo paper, will be provided. However, we invite you to bring any plant matter that holds personal meaning or significance to you.
