A film photography class adapted from photographer Beatrice Thorton's workshops in foraged plant film developing.
Explore a low-toxicity process for developing film that utilizes products you might find in your home cupboard, along with the unique twist of incorporating natural plant material foraged from the island.
In part one of this 2-day workshop, the class will meet at our Field Campus at 45 Hawthorne Lane for a scenic photo walk. The following day, for part two, class will gather at Alchemy's Forest Campus at 1255 Wold to do our film processing.
The workshop allows enough time for everyone to process up to 2 rolls of film. Participants will learn the basics of sustainable, do-it-yourself darkroom practice, providing the knowledge and techniques so they can start processing film at home.
If you're in need of a camera for this workshop, some are available for loan through Alchemy. Please make a note of this in your registration. Helpful to have prior knowledge using a film camera, though there will be an opportunity the first day to refresh your skills and ask questions.
Note: this is an experimental film developing process and there will be variation in results. Having a solid understanding of your light meter and proper exposure will likely render more consistent results.
This class is taught by Bay Area photographer Jenna Tessler. Jenna is traveling up to San Juan Island to teach this class!
This class is held in the Art Barn at our Field Campus at 45 Hawthorne Lane on day 1 and in our darkroom at our Forest Campus at 1255 Wold on day 2.
Registration: Please register early if you are able, as it helps us to assure that classes meet their minimums in order to run! If you register more than three weeks before this class begins, a 20% early bird discount will automatically be applied to your ticket at checkout.
A Note on Ticket Pricing: We are offering sliding scale tickets in order to keep our classes accessible to as many community members as possible. There are three price tiers. Sustaining tickets help us continue to invest in programming. Full price tickets cover the costs associated with running classes. Accessibility tickets are priced below what it costs for us to run a class. If the cost of a full price ticket is a hardship, we encourage you to purchase a sliding scale ticket. If you can pay the full price or sustaining price, please choose that option so we can keep providing arts programming to the community.
