About this Event
Growing part of one’s diet organically and using local resources is not only a way to improve one's mental health but also a possible positive contribution to addressing climate change. Designed to inspire urban growers of all levels and those who aspire to be one but are unsure where to start, the Plan Your Growing Zine-Making Workshop combines practical knowledge with creative expression to gently support and inspire participants in mapping out their personal growing journey, whether it's on a balcony, a windowsill, a community growing space or elsewhere. This session is facilitated by artist, gardener and Poetic Pastel Press founder Johanna Tagada Hoffbeck.
The workshop will unfold with a 30-minute illustrated talk to discover and discuss what we can cultivate to eat in the city, from herbs and flowers to fruits and vegetables, even with zero or limited access to green space—from windowsills to tiny balconies. Followed by a 90-minute Creative Zine-Making session to translate ideas into action and a plan to return to days, weeks and months after this workshop. Johanna will guide participants through drawing, collage, note-taking, and a simple thread-binding method to turn plans into unique zines.
Participants will return home with:
A selection of free seeds to get started.
Practical, foundational skills in basic zine-making and simple thread bookbinding.
A handmade urban growing zine to guide and inspire them in their planting journey.
No Experience Needed.
This is an adult-only workshop with complimentary organic herbal tea provided throughout the session
All Materials Provided, including pencils, natural plant-based pigment watercolours, and basic bookbinding tools
Participants are welcome to and encouraged to bring any existing materials (drawings, text snippets, cutouts) which they would like to incorporate into the zines
