Few years in jazz history have had the lasting impact of 1959. In a span of just a few months, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and the Dave Brubeck Quartet released three landmark recordings—Kind of Blue, Giant Steps, and Time Out—albums that forever changed the direction of jazz and continue to inspire musicians and listeners around the world. On Thursday, October 29, acclaimed Cincinnati pianist Phil DeGreg and his trio celebrate this remarkable moment in jazz history with an evening devoted to music from these timeless recordings. From the cool lyricism of Kind of Blue to the harmonic brilliance of Giant Steps and the rhythmic innovation of Time Out, the trio will revisit some of the most influential compositions ever recorded while bringing their own creativity and spontaneity to the music.
Joining DeGreg are two of Cincinnati's finest musicians: Aaron Jacobs on bass and John Taylor on drums. Together, the trio's conversational interplay and deep appreciation for the jazz tradition make them the perfect ensemble to honor these classic albums while keeping the music fresh, vibrant, and alive.
Whether you're discovering these masterpieces for the first time or returning to albums you know by heart, this concert offers a rare opportunity to experience the enduring legacy of 1959 in the intimate listening room of Caffè Vivace.
