Fundamentals of Patent Investing
Join Sanjay Pant and Gau Bodepudi, co-authors of Patents: An Emerging Asset Class, for an engaging and practical workshop.
With more than 40 years of collective experience as intellectual property attorneys, Sanjay and Gau have facilitated thousands of patent transactions and bring deep expertise across the full lifecycle of intellectual property—from invention conception to monetization and structured investment strategies.
This in-person Pant on Patents workshop will examine the evolving patent market and the role of the patent asset manager as the central coordinator among patent owners, investors, law firms, insurers, litigation funders, and licensing professionals. Attendees will explore patent evaluation through the Four-Legged Stool—infringement, validity, damages, and venue—as well as monetization strategies, campaign management, stakeholder coordination, and financial management.
The workshop will also examine the spectrum of patent investment structures and investor economics, including traditional litigation funding and structures incorporating capital and yield protection. Case studies will illustrate how different structures can affect investor profiles, return expectations, liquidity, downside protection, and overall transaction economics.
In addition, the workshop will delve into why artificial intelligence has become an economic necessity within the patent space rather than an optional efficiency tool. The session will also examine where AI currently stands within the patent industry itself, including its expanding role in patent drafting, prior art searching, and portfolio analytics.
Attendees will leave with a broader understanding of the infrastructure, participants, and economics involved in transforming patents into institutional investment opportunities.
