About this Event
Paper Bridges is an intimate writing and hand-sewing workshop that invites you to slow down, honor ancestral sacrifices, and write to someone you miss.
Workshop designed and facilitated by Annie Chyr for Homelands Festival.
What does it mean to carry home across oceans, borders, and generations? This workshop explores the history of qiaopi (侨批), the letters and money sent home by early Chinese migrants who traveled across Southeast Asia, the Americas, and the Caribbean for work.
We begin over warm tea, sharing archival stories of how these workers relied on couriers and hid money inside secret pockets sewn into their clothes. Inspired by their simple, powerful message, "I am safe, and I have not forgotten you," you will join a guided writing session to pen a letter in English to someone you miss.
After writing, you will turn your words into a lasting keepsake through simple hand-sewing. Using natural linen fabric, you will learn basic stitches to make a fabric envelope pouch that safely holds your letter. We will finish each piece with a traditional knotted loop closure, making the stitching process a calm, relaxing way to ground your emotions.
No sewing or writing experience is needed, and people from all backgrounds are welcome. You will head home with a completed handmade linen pouch, a meaningful personal letter, and a deeper connection to the journeys that brought us here.

ABOUT HOMELANDS FESTIVAL
Homelands is a week-long celebration of the many stories, traditions, and relationships that connect us to one another. Taking place across Houston October 17 - 24, 2026, the festival brings together artists, neighbors, and families to explore what we carry with us, what we inherit, and how we create a sense of home together.
Homelands was created to honor these inheritances and to make space for the many ways people build connection. Through art, music, food, storytelling, workshops, and collective gatherings, Homelands invites us to honor home not only as a place we come from, but something we build together.
