An evening of storytelling, song, and comedy in Irish
Irish eyes will most definitely be smiling with the return of this evening of storytelling and song. But this year, we’re adding to the evening with a light-hearted, conversational comedic experience through the medium of Irish.
Featuring story teller, Simon Ó Cróinín, singers from Ráth Chairn, Co. Meath Gaeltacht, sisters Máire and Étáin Ní Churraoin, stars of the award-winning series Bláth na hÓige (TG4), and stand-up comedy group, GaelGÁIRÍ, this event offers attendees a Friday night with a difference. Oh and did we mention, it’ll be held upstairs in Brady’s, The Clockhouse, Maynooth so plenty of opportunity for craic galore in a great social setting.
Simon Ó Cróinín is a beekeeper, gardener, musician and weaver. He lives in the Ráth Chairn Gaeltacht since 1980 and he has a great interest in the history and folklore of the area. He is the author of ‘Blas Meala,’ the story of beekeeping in Co. Meath over the last forty years.
An Chéad Glúin Eile are sean-nós singers, native Irish speakers and sisters from the Ráth Chairn Gaeltacht. Étáin and Máire Ní Churraoin sing sean-nós songs in harmony with each other. Their album is entitled ‘Cá’il an Bheirt? (Where are those two?). The sisters won first place in the TG4 family competition 'Réalta agus Gaolta' in 2019. Their great-uncle was the famous singer Darach Ó Catháin. ACGE perform on stages all over the country, the world and on television. The sisters are active on social media promoting Gaelic culture and heritage @AnCheadGhluinEile! Étáin and Máire are members of the inter-Gaeltacht group 'Bláth na hÓige', which won the RTÉ Folk Award for Folk Track of the year 2024, and of the band 'Aibhse'.
GaelGÁIRÍ is an Irish language comedy night which was founded in 2013. The comedy nights are usually organised in Dublin and at various festivals through tours of the country to Galway, Belfast, Cork, Laois, Leitrim and even internationally. A wide range of well-known comedians have listened to them. There will be some of GaelGÁIRÍ great comedians on the Maynooth stage, as well as a special guest or two from the University community...
