About this Event
Roll up, roll up!
Join local historian and writer Ian Gledhill for a fascinating and entertaining look at the people, places and pleasures that have shaped the English seaside.
Seaside towns first became fashionable with the gentry in the 18th century, when sea bathing was thought to be rather good for you. Before long, coastal towns were developing into fashionable resorts to rival traditional spa towns such as Bath and Harrogate.
Along the way, the British seaside developed a character all of its own – from bathing machines and pier shows to What the Butler Saw machines and the dreaded seaside landlady.
Ian has a particular interest in Brighton and Sussex and will bring this colourful history to life in a lively, lighthearted evening at West Hill Hall.
