For the past 39 years, the New Zealand Poetry Society Te Rōpu Toikupu o Aotearoa has published an annual anthology in conjunction with their International Poetry Competition. After the competition winners have been selected, the anthology editors select from entries into the year's anthology. The title of each anthology is chosen from a winning poem. For 2026, the title 'Naming a Small Bird' comes from the first-place-winning poem, 'Presynaptic' by Shey Marque.
