About this Event
This summer’s heatwaves tested cultural venues across the country. Many opened their doors as places to cool down. Others had to close, cancel performances or protect staff, audiences and collections from the heat. These are not one-off events. The weather we have now is the least extreme any of us will live through.
This half-day workshop looks at how cultural venues and organisations can support their communities and audiences through climate extremes. It covers what makes an effective cool space, including free access, drinking water and toilets, clear signage, evening opening hours and staff trained to recognise heat-related illness. It also looks at heat risk in the neighbourhood around your venue, and at who is least able to cope.
You will hear from venues in the Westminster Culture Sustainability Group and from Westminster City Council’s resilience, green spaces and engagement teams. Presentations are interleaved with practical activities. You will leave with immediate actions, a six-month plan, and points to add to your organisation’s risk register.
The workshop is the second in the Not the New Normal series on climate adaptation and resilience, part of JB’s Transforming Energy programme for Arts Council England.
