Am 16. Oktober 2026 hätte die Musik-Ikone Nico alias Christa Päffgen ihren 88. Geburtstag gefeiert.

On October 16, 2026, music icon Nico, alias Christa Päffgen, would have celebrated her 88th birthday. Traditionally, Berlin musician and Nico’s long-time companion and collaborator Lutz Graf-Ulbrich, aka Lüül, commemorates this day at Lichtblick-Kino.
This year, Lüül will present and comment a program featuring rarely shown music videos, live recordings, and an interview conducted before her final concert in the summer of 1988, “Fata Morgana,” at the West Berlin Planetarium. The focus is on Nico’s first studio recording, produced by Jimmy Page, prior to her collaboration with The Velvet Underground, as well as on her solo career in the 1970s and 1980s, in collaboration with musicians such as John Cale, Brian Eno, and others.
Nico was born Christa Päffgen in Cologne in 1938 and moved to Berlin during World War II. As she herself said, the bombings there shaped her later, somber musical work. She was discovered as a model at the KaDeWe department store, where her mother was a seamstress, by photographer Herbert Tobias. Soon, Nico was gracing covers and fashion spreads of renowned fashion magazines and catalogs. In the mid-1950s, Nico moved to Paris. There, she adopted the stage name Nico (presumably after the filmmaker Nikos Papatakis) and appeared in European auteur films, including Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” (1960). While signing with increasingly prestigious modeling agencies, she took acting lessons from Lee Strasberg in New York and explored music as a further form of creative expression.
In London she met musicians such as Brian Jones and Jimmy Page, who co-produced her first single, “I’m Not Sayin’” (1965)—which did not chart, but generated attention for Nico. Nico then moved to New York and, through Brian Jones, met Andy Warhol. She played a leading role in his film “Chelsea Girls” (1966) and was brought together with the Warhol-sponsored avant-garde rock band The Velvet Underground. Nico performed with the band at happenings, sang on three tracks of their groundbreaking debut album and would go on to collaborate repeatedly with Velvet Underground member John Cale, who (co-)produced four of her six studio albums and played as a musician on five of them.
Through The Velvet Underground, as well as the dark poetry, deep, funereal vocals, and melancholic harmonium playing in her solo work, Nico inspired numerous musicians in the post-punk and Gothic scenes, including Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Björk, Bauhaus, and The Cure. Nico performed live with Bauhaus and Siouxsie, recorded a duet with Marc Almond, and toured with younger musicians from the post-punk scene in Manchester—Nico’s last permanent residence before her death in July 1988 following a bicycle accident in Ibiza. Nico’s enigmatic persona and her extraordinary career continue to fascinate new generations of fans to this day.
Lutz Graf Ulbrich aka Lüül
Lutz Graf-Ulbrich aka Lüül played in German “Krautrock” bands such as Agitation Free and Ash Ra Tempel/Ashra. He accompanied Nico as a guitarist in the 1970s in Europe, USA, and Canada. He wrote the song “Reich der Träume” (Realm of Dreams) for her, which she sang on his debut LP Lüül (1981). With Ash Ra Tempel, he contributed to the soundtrack of Philippe Garrel’s film “Le Berceau de Cristal” (with Nico in a main role).
Lüül organized Nico’s last concert for the festival “Fata Morgana – Wüstenklänge im Planetarium” (Fata Morgana – Desert Sounds in the Planetarium) in Berlin in 1988 (released on CD in 1996 under his production). After Nico died two months later, he organized her funeral and has been the caretaker of her grave ever since. He also participated in Susanne Ofteringer’s award-winning documentary film “Nico-Icon” and initiated the tribute festival “Nico 70/20” in Berlin in 2008.
In 2015, Graf-Ulbrich published his book “Nico – Im Schatten der Mondgöttin” (Nico – In the Shadow of the Moon Goddess). In these memoirs, he recounts their first meeting, how he fell in love with her in the 1970s, and how this encounter developed into a stormy on-and-off love affair, artistic collaboration, and lifelong friendship. He regularly performs multimedia readings from his book about his time with this legendary artist.
