About this Event

What does it mean to publish architecture today? And what role can publishing play in fostering architectural discourse both within and beyond the academic environment?

Join The Cooper Union School of Architecture for an evening celebrating the launch of new books and digital platforms, with a roundtable conversation bringing together editors, publishers, writers, architects, and educators working across a diverse range of independent and established architectural publications.

Publishing has long been central to the development of architectural culture. Within schools of architecture, books, journals, and other forms of publication provide a means of extending conversations generated in studios and classrooms into the larger discipline. Outside the academy, publications, galleries, bookstores, and digital platforms create spaces where ideas can circulate across professional, cultural, and geographic boundaries, allowing architecture to engage with a wider constellation of voices and disciplines.

What does a publication make possible that other forms of architectural practice cannot? How do editorial decisions—what is selected, how it is framed, and who is invited to contribute—shape the questions architecture asks of itself? And how might different formats, from the printed page and the architectural print to the digital platform and bookstore, produce different kinds of knowledge and exchange? As architectural discourse becomes increasingly dispersed across varied forms of communication, what is gained—and what might be lost—through this proliferation of voices and formats?

The discussion will feature Cynthia Davidson of /Any; Owen Nichols and Clara Syme of A83; Ashley Simone of Architectural Design (AD); Iman Fayyad and Kyle Miller of Table; Tiffany Jow of Untapped; Alvaro Alcocer and Alexandra Hodkowski of Head-Hi; Steven Hillyer, director of The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture Archive, and founding archive director Kim Shkapich. The conversation will be moderated by School of Architecture faculty member Matt Shaw.

This program is presented in the context of the launch of School of Architecture publications Thesis 2025, Foundation, and the exhibition catalog for Sue Ferguson Gussow: Retrospective, as well as two digital platforms: CMU.place and the Exhibitions Collection database.
