About this Event
Leica Project Room Lisboa apresenta “New Lisbon”, de Gonçalo Fonseca.
New Lisbon recebeu o Leica Oskar Barnack Award – Newcomer (2020), o Prémio Estação Imagem – Vida Quotidiana (2020) e o Yunghi Grant (2020). Foi ainda finalista no Pictures of the Year International (2021) e apresentado em quatro continentes.

English Version
Leica Project Room Lisboa presents “New Lisbon” by Gonçalo Fonseca
Developed between 2019 and 2021, New Lisbon portrays the profound impact of the housing crisis on Lisbon’s most vulnerable communities. Against a backdrop of sharply rising property prices, thousands of families lost their homes and were pushed into precarious living conditions, informal occupation or homelessness.
From the city centre to its surrounding neighbourhoods, Gonçalo Fonseca followed different realities: from elderly residents facing housing harassment and the threat of eviction to single mothers occupying empty apartments.
Through these individual stories, the photographer reveals the human consequences of the capital’s ongoing gentrification, creating a visual chronicle of a city in transformation, where the ideas of home and belonging have become increasingly complex.
When Gonçalo began the project in 2019, Lisbon was already facing a profound housing crisis. Foreign investment, the rapid growth of short-term rentals and low wages were contributing to a reality affecting thousands of families.
New Lisbon received the Leica Oskar Barnack Award – Newcomer (2020), the Estação Imagem – Daily Life Award (2020) and the Yunghi Grant (2020). It was also a finalist in Pictures of the Year International (2021) and has been exhibited across four continents.
The exhibition is part of the official programme of IMAGO Lisboa – Photo Festival 2026, an international contemporary photography festival bringing together exhibitions, encounters and other initiatives across different cultural venues in Lisbon.
