The Sequim City Band brings together musicians from throughout the Olympic Peninsula to perform free concerts for our community. Our November concert features music inspired by mystery, legends, the changing season, and stories that have captured our imaginations.
Our journey begins with Julie Giroux’s Mystery on Mena Mountain, a programmatic work inspired by an Ozark legend surrounding two children who disappeared near Mena Mountain in 1940. The music follows their mysterious journey into the mountains and the mist.
We’re also excited to present the world premiere of Tarantella Infernale by local composer and musician Vincent Oneppo. The tarantella is a fast, whirling dance surrounded by centuries of folklore, including tales connecting its frantic dancing with the bite of a tarantula. Tarantella Infernale draws on that dark and mysterious history with a driving, energetic work for concert band.
We’ll turn to the familiar sounds of Autumn Leaves, the Joseph Kosma classic in an arrangement by renowned band composer Alfred Reed. Randall Standridge’s energetic Danse Bohémien features Sequim City Band percussionist Cheryl Mingee in a lively work inspired by Eastern European dance.
This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. We’ll celebrate with Howard Shore’s music from the film in an arrangement by Jan Valta, featuring many of the memorable themes that helped bring Middle-earth to life on the big screen.
We’ll also perform Ralph Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite, one of the classics of the wind band repertoire. Written in 1923, the three-movement work is built from traditional English folk songs and remains one of Vaughan Williams’ best-known works for band.
Our exploration of mystery and lore continues with The Man in the Ice, inspired by the discovery of Ötzi, the 5,000-year-old “Iceman” found preserved in the Alps.
Finally, we close with John Philip Sousa’s Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, written for the Shriners and premiered in 1923 with Sousa conducting a band of more than 6,000 musicians.
Bring your family and friends and join us for an afternoon of live music as we explore Mystery, Lore, and Wonder. Admission is free, and donations are always appreciated.
