Do you remember that tree in the park where you used to meet your friends? Transform it into a tasteful bonnet. Your mum’s old floral sofa? A lovely gown. That night out when you found a bra on a lamp-post? A rich source of inspiration for a look.
Reject the archive and the history books for a moment, and come inspired by what matters to you. These playful costume-making workshops invite you to turn personal memories, family stories, everyday objects and fragments of Portsmouth life into something to wear.
About the Facilitator
These workshops are led by Heather Smy, a multidisciplinary artist, actor and model whose creative practice spans art, fashion and performance.

Inspired by Downtown Pompey’s new online archive, created by the Alternative Archiving Group, and by the idea of dressing up through memory, heritage and self-expression, these sessions are a chance to make costumes, garments and accessories for the .

Session 1: Friday 6 November
Downtown Pompey Office
This first session focuses on making and constructing. Using sewing machines and simple costume-making techniques, you can begin building a garment, look or wearable piece inspired by your own memories, heritage and Portsmouth life.
Session 2: Saturday 14 November
Play Office, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
This second session is all about embellishment and accessorising. Bring a piece of clothing to transform, add detail to something you’ve already started, or create accessories and finishing touches for the Memory Pageant.

Once you've made your look, it's time to show it off!
Join us for an evening of dressing up, performance and playful reinvention, celebrating personal memories and Portsmouth's many stories.
Everyone attending the workshops is encouraged to join the Pageant afterwards. It's free, but you'll need to book a separate ticket.
