Mazaher er en gruppe musikere og sangere med base i Kairo, som siden slutningen af 90’erne har holdt liv i Egyptens zār-traditioner. Zār er rituel musik, som bygger på sang, dans og polyrytmisk trommespil, og har til formål at skabe harmoni mellem deltagerne; zār handler om løsne de sociale bånd, der binder én. Derudover er et kendetegn ved zār, at kvinderne fører an i ritualet. Blandt musikerne i Mazaher finder man Um Sameh, Um Hassan og Nour El Sabah, som er nogle af de sidste i Egypten, som praktiserer zār. Så lad ikke chance for at opleve dette musikalske ritual gå dig forbi!
Den musik, som Mazaher præsenterer, er inspireret af tre forskellige, egyptiske zār-stilarter. Dertil udgør det hellige, seksstrengede instrument tamboura og percussion-instrumentet mangour vigtige for zār-ritualet. Mazaher har gennem årene spillet i både Europa, Nordafrika og Mellemøsten, og overalt hvor de kommer, drager de publikum til sig med zār-musikkens helende og forsonende effekt. Mazaher har før slået vejen forbi ALICE, og vi er så glade for igen at skulle fordybe os i denne fantastiske musiktradition.

Mazaher carries on the ancient zār rituals, offering a captivating and cathartic concert experience.
Mazaher is a group of musicians and singers based in Cairo who, since the late 1990s, have kept the Egyptian zār traditions alive. Zār is ritual music built on song, dance, and polyrhythmic drumming, aiming to create harmony among participants; zār is about loosening the social bonds that tie one down. A distinctive feature of zār is that women lead the ritual. Among Mazaher’s musicians are Um Sameh, Um Hassan, and Nour El Sabah – some of the last in Egypt still practicing zār. So don’t miss the chance to experience this musical ritual!
The music that Mazaher presents is inspired by three different Egyptian zār styles. Central to the zār ritual are the sacred six-stringed instrument, the tamboura, and the percussion instrument, the mangour. Over the years, Mazaher has performed across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, and wherever they go, they captivate audiences with the healing and reconciliatory power of zār music. Mazaher has previously visited ALICE, and we are delighted to once again immerse ourselves in this remarkable musical tradition.
