Mata ni Pachedi: From Gujarat to Shoreditch

As part of the Shoreditch Sandbox: First Threads season, join us for the very first Play Around workshop at Shoreditch Sandbox, led by master artisan Kirit Chitara. Discover Mata ni Pachedi, a traditional textile art from Gujarat, India, in which stories, symbols and devotion are brought together through hand-painted cloth.

Kirit will share his personal stories and techniques behind the tradition and introduce you to some of its motifs and methods. You’ll learn about preparing natural pigments, explore traditional imagery, and have the opportunity to create a piece of your own on cloth to take home.

Originating with the Chitara community, Mata ni Pachedi has been passed down through generations. Traditionally made as cloth hangings dedicated to the Mother Goddess, the practice is known for its distinctive imagery, natural pigments and rich visual language.

The session is open to anyone interested in exploring a different way of making, looking and storytelling.

No previous experience is needed. Whether you’re a local resident, student, designer, artist or simply interested in trying something new, you’re very welcome to join.

Shoreditch Sandbox is a new space for making, experimenting and bringing people together around ideas, materials and creativity.
